Welcome back to our ongoing series called: The 10 Beliefs. (If you missed the first post, you can catch it here.)
This series will walk you through the seven most common money mistakes and help you identify them. Then, we'll show you the ten things we believe you should be doing. Because we firmly believe you can stop worrying about money, gain confidence and financial freedom, secure your lifestyle and retire happy with dignity and grace.
Mistake #1 - Living Stressed Out
A lot of smart, successful six-figure employees spend too much time worrying about funding their retirement. They lay awake at night, their minds churning with financial worries. As wealth managers, we see it all the time.
According to a Gallup poll conducted in May of this year, one-quarter of Americans worry “all” or “most” of the time that their combined household income won’t be enough. Specifically, they worry about saving enough for retirement and what an unplanned medical cost might do to them.
Money stresses are widespread across the board and it's easy to understand why. Credit card debt at the end of 2018 sat at nearly $1 trillion according to the Federal Reserve. Student loan debt has jumped 150% over just a decade. And it's not just debt that’s the problem. One in four Americans have no savings. And pensions are a thing of the past. We hear constantly that Social Security is dying. It leaves us wondering, “What should I do?”
The road to retirement has changed dramatically since our parent’s and grandparent’s generations. People feel like the rules were changed, and they never got a copy of the new book.
But, no matter how it may feel, it is possible to stop worrying about money all the time. Really.
Too many people don’t know where they stand financially. They have no financial plan and they’re tackling saving for retirement with little to no help. Let’s face it, that company-sponsored retirement plan handbook reads like it's written in a foreign language. You feel like you’re on your own, so you worry about the mistakes you might be making. The ones you aren’t even aware you’re making.
You can climb out of the trap of doubt and insecurity with a comprehensive financial plan. We’ve found that a Custom Financial Blueprint gives our clients the confidence to stop worrying about money all the time.
